Why Do We Use a Psychological Assessment?
At GIA Miami, our psychological assessments help us build a detailed diagnostic picture of your mental health.
Every patient has an initial psychiatric evaluation, but we sometimes need more information and recommend a more intensive psychological assessment. This assessment takes between four and six hours and includes a variety of clinical-standard tests.
This whole process helps us decide which treatments are best suited for your specific needs. In short, we look at your past and present to help you plan for your future.
How Will a Psychological Assessment Help Me?
The assessment process is a vital step in your journey of self-growth, and we will discuss our findings with you. Having an understanding of your condition can be reassuring. You’ll understand how certain triggers and past events could have contributed to your current state.
When we understand the problem, we can help you move towards the solution and help you understand how your treatment plan will work. We’ll also use it to set goals and milestones and rule out any other conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms.
Although the term psychological assessment might conjure up negative images for some people, you can rest assured we carry out every part of the assessment with compassion and patient respect in mind.
We want to challenge the stereotype that mental health treatment needs to be unnecessarily difficult. Our aim is for you to feel at home from the moment you walk into our center.
How Do I Prepare For a Psychological Assessment?
We don’t need you to do anything special to prepare; however, the more information we have, the better. If you do have any existing documentation you think is relevant, please feel free to bring it along.
We’d also encourage you to think about your reasons for wanting an assessment. Gathering our thoughts can be difficult, especially in times of crisis, so keeping a journal in the days before could help. We’ll ask questions about:
- Symptoms of mental health conditions
- Worrying thoughts or behaviors
- Events that worsen symptoms
- Duration of symptoms
- Frequency of symptoms
- Substance use (if applicable)
We’d also like you to think about what your goals are. When we know what you’re aiming for, we can start helping you get there.
How Do I Know I Need a Psychological Assessment?
You know when you’re not feeling your best; however, some warning signs highlighted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) include:
- Sudden mood changes
- Feeling nervous for no reason
- Withdrawing socially
- Excessive substance use
- Trouble concentrating
- Difficulty performing usual tasks
- Increased sensitivity to sounds, smells, or touch
- Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
Can I Bring a Family Member or Friend With Me for Support?
We want you to be at ease during your time with us – the best healing takes place when we’re relaxed. If having someone with you would make your assessment easier, we would encourage you to bring them.
Additionally, you can have someone with you during any stage of your treatment if it will make you more comfortable.
